We live in an off-grid location, so designing a system to work on as little power as possible was one of our primary considerations. Working with this parameter, we found an adjustable rate pump which can optimize its efficiency within a range of rates. This allowed us to design our water flow path, PVC sizing, and Australian-styled flush beds with room to fine-tune once installed. We chose media-filled ebb-and-flow biofilters, and have discovered that Glenn Martinez of Olomana Gardens was on to something about using black cinders for their oxygenation potential. Integration of Natural Farming inputs and sprays has minimized the need for chemical pH adjustments. These two systems have been in operation since summer, 2009, and provide fresh produce for farmhands, family, and 10 CSA shares.
Because of the limited market for commercial-sized system workshops, we have decided to offer individually-scheduled private consulting at a rate of $50/hr.
